Before Fame

After graduating from St. Paul's School in London, he trained as a lawyer. He later fought in World War I.

Trivia

He began his political career as a member of the Liberal Party. Later, he switched his allegiance to the Labour Party.

Family Life

His wife, Eleanor, headed the London County Council, and he and his son, Roger, both had careers as barristers.

Associated With

He served as Under-Secretary of State for War in the last year (1945) of the first administration of Winston Churchill.
