Hard bop pioneer and leader on more than thirty recordings, known for his unique style of saxophone playing. He was a prolific recording artist with Blue Note Records from the 1950s to the 1970s.

He received a saxophone when he was sixteen years old and went on to work with the likes of Dizzy Gillespie in his early twenties.

He was involved with the production of the sessions album Horace Silver and the Jazz Messengers, one of the first hard bop recordings.
