Gottfried von Cramm

Professional tennis player and celebrity family member who is remembered for having won the French Championships on two occasions. In the year 1977, he was posthumously inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

Trivia

He was the men's singles runner-up at the Wimbledon Championships for three years in a row. He was conscripted into military service in 1940 during World War II. Despite his enormous popularity with the public, on March 5, 1938, he was arrested by the German government and tried on the charge of a homosexual relationship with Manasse Herbst, a young Galician Jewish actor and singer, who had appeared in the 1926 silent film Der Sohn des Hannibal.

Family Life

He was married to socialite Barbara Hutton from 1955 until 1959.
