George Murphy

Dancer, actor, and former U.S. senator from California who served as President of the Screen Actors Guild and received an honorary Academy Award in 1951.

Before Fame

He briefly attended Yale until deciding to give up college and become a dancer. He worked as a miner, a tool maker for Ford, a real estate agent, and a nightclub dancer.

Trivia

Known as a song and dance man, he appeared in many big-budget musicals, such as For Me and My Gal, Broadway Melody of 1938, and Broadway Melody of 1940. He also appeared in comedy films such as Tom, Dick and Harry.

Family Life

His father was athletic trainer and coach, Mike Murphy. He married twice and had two children.
