George Dwyer

Catholic leader who served as the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Birmingham from 1965 to 1981. He was the first President of the Bishops' Conference who was not also the Archbishop of Westminster.

Before Fame

He earned doctorates in Philosophy and Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University.

Trivia

He declined the position of Archbishop of Westminster because he felt that, at age 67, he was too old to accept.

Family Life

He was the cousin of Anthony Burgess, author of the influential novel A Clockwork Orange.
