Gary Karr

About

Famous for his acclaimed work on the double bass, this classical and jazz musician performed with the London, Chicago, and Montreal Symphony Orchestras; the Jerusalem Sympony; and the Zurich Chamber Orchestra.

Before Fame

He trained at both the Juilliard School in New York City and the Aspen Music Festival and School in Colorado.

Trivia

He taught in the music departments at Indiana University, the North Carolina School of the Arts, Yale University, and the New England Conservatory.

Family Life

A native of Los Angeles, California, he grew up in a family of bass players, although his relatives did little to encourage his interest in music.

Associated With

He rose to fame after performing a solo of Camille Saint-Saens'"The Swan" at a 1962 New York Philharmonic young musicians' concert conducted by Leonard Bernstein.
