He studied industrial journalism at Kansas State Agricultural College, where he also gained an interest in poetry.

He was a member of a number of groups dedicated to equal rights, including the Civil Rights Congress, and the Chicago Civil Liberties Committee.

Family Life

He was married to Thelma Boyd for thirteen years and Helen Canfield for twenty four years. He had five children, one son and four daughters.
