Before Fame

He followed in his father's mining footsteps. He studied geophysics in college and worked summers with the U.S. Geological Survey.

Trivia

He organized the Amerada Petroleum Corporation, which became the Fortune 100 oil company Hess. He founded Geophysical Service Incorporated, finding oil deposits through geophysics.

He was born in Greensburg, Kansas, the eldest of three children to John and Narcissa Kagy Huddle DeGolyer.

His GSI company spun off an equipment-designing branch called Texas Instruments, the company through which Jack Kilby brought about the microchip revolution.
