Character actor who appeared in Hollywood films from the 1930s to the 1950s, including Mama Loves Papa and King of Alcatraz. His perpetual scowl gave him an air of frustration that worked to great effect in many different roles.

Before Fame

He was a violinist, performing around local tents for a decade before going to Detroit. He eventually moved to Hollywood.

He was married to Effie Laird and the couple had two children together.

His first screen role was in Bing Crosby's 1938 film, Dr. Rhythm, but his part was cut.
