He formed his environmentalist views while studying philosophy at the University of New Mexico, taking time in between his studies to explore the land. 

Trivia

Another of his best-known works, Desert Solitaire, explored the consequences of human intrusion into the desert landscape of southeastern Utah.

He was born in Indiana, Pennsylvania and his father was a farmer and a logger.
