Dorothy Stang

American-born Brazilian nun who was an outspoken advocate for the environment and the rights of the poor. She was murdered on her way to a community meeting for Amazon rights.

Before Fame

She was born in the United States but became a naturalized Brazilian citizen in the 1970s.

Trivia

She worked steadfastly against deforestation, earning her the resentment of local ranchers, many of whom employed criminals.

Family Life

She had one brother, David Stang, who met with the American Ambassador to Brazil following her death.
