A fiction author, screenwriter, journalist, and publisher, she wrote several short fiction collections, including Prayers of An Accidental Nature (1999) and Drought & Say What You Like (1997). For her 1999 screenplay, Drought, she received a Cinovation Screenwriting Award.

Before Fame

Early in her career, she worked as an art columnist for The Pitch magazine. In 1984, she published her debut novel, What the Body Requires.

Trivia

She launched an innovative multimedia project called The Jiri Chronicles.

Family Life

She was born in Kirksville, a small town in Missouri. She later settled in Seattle, Washington, where she founded Jaded Ibis Press.
