Before Fame

He studied at Brown University before relocating to New York City in the early 1960s.

He worked as a drummer for jazz ensembles.

Family Life

He was married to Toni Carbo from 1962-66. After his divorce, he married Susan Hopkins, with whom he had a daughter named Cecilia.

He was inspired by Beat Generation writer Jack Kerouac.
