Former mayor of Raleigh, North Carolina from 1973 to 1975 who was the first African American elected mayor of a metropolitan Southern city. His election is considered a watershed moment in race relations.

Before Fame

He served in the U.S. Army for three years during World War II.

He served as an interim State Senator for a year after Senator John Winters resigned in 1977.

He had four children with his wife Marguerite Massey.
