He taught for over twenty years in the Education Department at North Carolina's Winston-Salem State University, and he also served on the North Carolina General Assembly.

Family Life

He and his twelve siblings grew up on a farm in North Carolina.

Associated With

He, like Rosa Parks, refused to give up his bus seat for a white passenger. He was arrested for his 1947 act and, after taking his case to court, was awarded $2,000 in damages by Atlantic Greyhound Bus Lines.
