Prominent 19th-century painter known for her portraits of the social and political elite. She carried on the style pioneered by John Singer Sargent.

Before Fame

She first studied painting under the guidance of her artist cousin, Catharine Ann Drinker. Later, she studied art at the Académie Julian in Paris.

Trivia

She painted portraits of Georges Clemenceau, Lady George Darwin, William Henry Howell, and many other prominent figures.

Family Life

She was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and was the daughter of a French silk manufacturer, Jean Adolphe Beaux.

She was a contemporary of the more famous artist Mary Cassatt.
