Remembered for his collaborations with such notable jazz musicians as Humphrey Lyttelton and Don Byas, this 20th-century jazz saxophonist and clarinetist served as the bandleader for numerous recordings, including The Dirty Bopper and That's the Blues, Dad.

Before Fame

He learned the clarinet during his childhood years and started playing the alto saxophone during his World War II-era service in the Royal Air Force.

Trivia

For a time, he, Peter Ind, and Dill Jones were members of a band that performed on the famous Queen Mary ocean liner.

Family Life

Born Malcolm Bruce Turner, he grew up in Saltburn-by-the-Sea and London, England. His memoir, Hot Air, Cool Music, was published in 1984.

In the early 1950s, he briefly studied with the American saxophonist Lee Konitz.
