American singer and piano player who releasd a hit single called "Candy" and who received the Grammy Hall of Fame Award in 1999. She released her self-titled debut in 1954.

Before Fame

She sang gospel as a child and went on to work with Dave Clark's Memphis Band in 1936.

Trivia

Her album, The Okeh Sessions, won the W.C. Handy Award for Vintage or Reissue Album of the Year in 1983.

She had one daughter named Barbara Smith.
