Annie Elizabeth Delany

About

One of the first African-American dentists in the state of New York, this important figure in the history of American civil rights was the subject of a bestselling book titled Having Our Say: The Delany Sisters' First 100 Years.

Before Fame

A native of Raleigh, North Carolina, she went on to earn a degree in dentistry from Columbia University in New York City.

She lived to be one hundred and four years old.

Family Life

She and her sister Sadie Delany, two of the ten children born to minister and former slave Henry Beard Delany, both had remarkable early achievements. Sadie Delany was the first African-American home economics teacher in the New York school system.
