Alexander Cartwright

About

Founding member of the New York Knickerbockers Base Ball Club in the 1840s. He was an inductee of the Baseball Hall of Fame but was sometimes referred to as a "father of baseball."

Before Fame

He first worked at the age of 16 in 1836 as a clerk for a Wall Street broker, later doing clerical work at the Union Bank of New York.

Trivia

He became a prominent citizen in Honolulu, serving as the city's first fire chief and as a trusted advisor to Queen Emma of Hawaii. 46 years after his death, he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame due to his status as a pioneering contributor to the game.

Family Life

His great grandfather is Hester Burlock. He is the son of Alexander Cartwright Sr., a merchant sea captain, and Esther Rebecca Burlock Cartwright. He had six siblings.
